Grubs |
 |
.... 1998-99, grubs establish as a serious threat
.... 2000, thousands of unprotected lawns devastated
.... 2001 & 2002, grub devastation problem escalated
.... 2003, CONGRATULATIONS to those who had Merit, the results continue to be great |
- 2/3 of many Southern Ontario lawns have been devastated
- many Ottawa & area lawns are being damaged or destroyed
- grubs often go unnoticed until damage has occurred because they are below the turf
|
- untreated, grubs can destroy your lawn within weeks
- skunks, raccoons, & birds tear up your lawn since grubs are great food for them
- "MERIT" is the solution of the future
- This is a pesticide based on "new" science
|
| NOW, HERE ARE MORE FACTS FROM THE EXPERTS AT NUTRI-LAWN... |
Congratulations to Nutri-Lawn's thousands of customers who had a "June-Nov" MERIT grub control application on their lawns in 2003. "MERIT" exceeded all expectations. Grubs have been significantly reduced on lawns that received "MERIT" in 2003. In many cases, one neighbour's lawn had grubs while their adjoining neighbour, who had a "MERIT" application, was grub free. The success stories keep pouring in! Either on its own or combined with a lawn care program, "MERIT" proved itself to be highly effective in reducing the grub populations in the Ottawa Region. Remember, "MERIT" is not a one-time solution. If you are in a high grub area & even if you had "MERIT" last summer, you will still need it in June/July 2004. Continue with a "June-Nov" MERIT grub control application each season to protect yourself against these damaging, costly pests.

GRUB QUESTIONS & PROBLEMS
What are grubs and where do they come from?
- Grubs are the larvae of beetles. The most common forms of beetles affecting lawns in the Ottawa region are the European Chafer and the June beetles.
- In June/July, the beetles fly around the trees, mate, and then lay their eggs in the turf. Those eggs develop into grubs that eat the roots of the turf.
Why are grubs on my lawn when I have been taking care of it?
- The beetles fly and are very mobile. They do not favour one lawn over the other & will lay their eggs on any lawn.
How can the grubs do so much damage?
- There are 2 forces working to damage your lawn; grubs work under the soil and the raccoons, skunks, & birds attack from above!
- The major factor to turf damage is the actual grub population. Lots of grubs result in lots of damage. They eat the roots of the grass plants, which are the support of the plant.
- Raccoons, skunks, & birds will tear up your turf while foraging for the grubs, which make great food.
Is there a one-time solution to this problem?
- No, unfortunately they are here to stay.
- The beetles fly, so even if you treated them one year, you probably will have them again.
- We have been lucky so far. Many provinces and all mainland states in the U.S. have a grub problem.

GRUB CONTROL & SOLUTIONS
| Nutri-Lawn only uses pesticides if necessary. Merit should only be ordered if you are in a high European Chafer Beetle/Grub area or if you have had a damage problem on your lawn, or neighbour's lawn, in the past year. |
Can grubs be prevented from damaging my lawn?
- Yes, Nutri-Lawn has introduced our "June-Nov" ("MERIT") preventative (90%)* grub program. "MERIT" is applied in June/July & will immediately stop the newly hatching grubs from feeding, effectively reducing the fall grub population.
- For a "no pesticide" solution, call us and ask us for details about our nematodes.
When is the best time to control the grubs for my current situation? IF YOU HAD ...
- grubs in fall (2003) & you did not treat: order our "Contact Grub Control (Spring)". Continue to monitor activity.
- grubs in fall (2003) & you treated: monitor grub activity in the spring and order our "Contact Grub Control" (Spring) only if you see grub activity. Definitely, order our June-Nov ("MERIT") prevention grub program. We will apply "MERIT" in June/July to stop the newly hatched eggs from feeding.
- grubs in the spring: order our "Contact Grub Control (Spring)" to stop spring grub feeding.
- grub activity in the past year, controlled or not: order our "June-Nov" ("MERIT") prevention (90%)* grub program. Stop the damaging fall grubs before they start to feed.
